How many Long Covid cases in the US?

There are 18 million long covid cases in the US and 60 million people have ever experienced long covid there.  This translates to 5.3% of the population currently with long covid and 17.9% who have ever had it per the CDC September 2024 Household Pulse Survey.

Most affected groups

Twice as many females have long covid compared to males.  Around 12 million females in the US have long covid compared with 6 million males.

One quarter of those with long covid (24.3%) are experiencing significant limitations on their abilities.

Late middle aged people are most affected.  Currently with long covid is 7.0% of 40-49 year olds and 6.6% of 50-59 year olds compared with 5.3% of the population.

How many Long Covid cases worldwide?

Around 400 million people globally are estimated to have ever had long covid as of the end of 2023.  This is based on an August 2024 research paper by Ziyad Al-Aly “Long COVID science, research and policy”. That translates to around 72 million people currently with long covid around the world. The prognosis is highly variable.

These figures are likely conservative due to the methodology used.
